More Normals

Image
Bigger Challenge and a new Method: Wall on left is what I am going after (2654 polys). Wall on Right is what I have to work with ( 34 polys ). Normal Transfer didn't work out so well in Maya so I created my own Normal Map using Photoshop. Then touched up the color map. Much nicer! I wish the top blocks could have 'stuck out' better but this will work. All in all, not bad for 34 polys :)

Transfer Normals

Image
Yet another thing I've never done before :) Here are the High End and Low End door models. I had to add in some extra extrusions to get all normals to transfer properly. The 'low poly' door has 46 Tris while the high poly has 248 Tris. Looks like the low poly door renders nicer :) Bitch'n. Now to render out Occlusion Map and start Painting.

Edge Transform Issue and Fix

Image
New tricks for an old dog: I had an issue with transforming an edge using the Input Mode in the Status Bar (never used before). I selected an extruded edge, snapped to polygon edge and inputed the transform. Didn't Work at all!     To cheat, I use discrete move option. But the real Fix is easy. Just change Input Mode Option to Relative. Default is Absolute. That is it. All works now :)  I know that is so basic but I never, in all my years, have used that tool. I am digging it BTW.

Textures and Teardowns

Okay, did a teardown of the 2 side walls. Now have 2 modules with stacked UV's on each side of building. ENTER PHOTOSHOP! Before I get started on my Occlusion Maps, I thought I would go ahead and get a nice repeating brick texture started. I have the bump map done as well. I assume it will be part of the normal map. ( If memory is correct :D ) I cannot wait to get Normal Maps done!! I really want to get rid of all those little cubes :) One step at a time.

Let's get started!

Spent the morning looking for good reference photos. Flickr is the place to go! Going with this post office: I managed to find another one showing the other side so..bonus!  Also found one of back of building using Google Earth ;)  Got the rough block out done today.

"Certified" :)

Ok, I completed this Lynda.com course. I spent over 8hrs viewing it. I had to re-watch about half of it just to absorb it better. Now for follow up exercise!!

New Frontiers

Well, I finally got around to learning about modeling Game Assets! Just to get my feet wet, I made a low poly office building (could've been lower). Not bad though.
